OpenAI is poised to launch its latest breakthrough in artificial intelligence—a model that goes beyond merely assisting with routine tasks and answering factual questions.
According to reports from The Information, the AI powerhouse is set to introduce “Strawberry,” a reasoning-focused AI model, within the next two weeks.
This new model marks a significant shift in AI capabilities, allowing the system to “think” before generating responses, rather than providing immediate answers.
AI with Reasoning Capabilities
Unlike the standard conversational AI integrated into ChatGPT, Strawberry is designed to simulate deeper cognitive processes.
Generating responses will take 10 to 20 seconds, reflecting its reasoning process.
Initially, Strawberry will only process and produce text, without immediate support for multimodal outputs like images.
OpenAI’s Current AI Landscape
At present, OpenAI’s most advanced publicly available model, GPT-4o, offers GPT-4-level intelligence with rapid response times and capabilities across text, voice, and vision.
However, Strawberry represents a different approach—one focused on enhancing AI’s ability to tackle more complex, real-world problems.
Limited Details but High Expectations
While details about Strawberry’s capabilities remain scarce, OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman has been teasing the release for several months.
Reports of the new model, codenamed “Strawberry,” surfaced in July, initially predicting a November 2023 launch.
However, the release has been accelerated, with the official announcement now expected in just two weeks.
Intriguingly, Strawberry is expected to autonomously browse the internet, conducting “deep research” to solve intricate problems at scale, as described by OpenAI.
Last month, Altman fueled speculation by posting a photo of ripe strawberries, captioned, “I love summer in the garden,” which many interpreted as a nod to the forthcoming model.
OpenAI’s Meteoric Rise
Since the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, OpenAI has rapidly become a dominant force in the tech industry.
As of September 5, the San Francisco-based company reported a 67% increase in paid users since April, surpassing the one million mark across its business services, including ChatGPT Enterprise, Team, and Edu.
In addition, OpenAI is rumored to be preparing new, more expensive subscription plans for its upcoming large language models (LLMs), such as Strawberry and Orion, with some plans potentially costing upwards of $2,000 per month.
