You may have heard of ChatGPT being used for productive purposes, but did you know someone recently claimed it influenced their actions in a stalking case? In a chilling incident, Farhan Ali, a 27-year-old student and Just Eat driver from Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, allegedly used the popular AI chatbot to send unsettling messages to Caitlin Smith, a McDonald’s worker.
How It All Started
Ali first approached Caitlin late one night in the McDonald’s parking lot, where she was emptying the bins. He had seen her before, as he worked nearby, but this time, he asked for her contact details. Understandably, Caitlin ignored him and blocked him on Snapchat and Instagram after receiving unwanted messages.
The Messages and AI Involvement
Despite being blocked, Ali persisted. He claimed in court that his messages were written with the help of ChatGPT. He used the AI chatbot to craft what he described as a harmless apology. The chatbot, he said, suggested he write: “Hey, I hope you are well, I understand that my messages may make you feel uncomfortable.” He then asked her again if she’d like to meet for coffee. However, Caitlin did not respond and eventually blocked him across all platforms.
The Disturbing Behavior
Ali’s actions didn’t stop with social media messages. He showed up at the restaurant again, ordering a milkshake specifically to see Caitlin. Though Ali claimed that he simply wanted a milkshake, prosecutor Redmond Harris argued that this was an attempt to “engineer contact”. Additionally, there were claims that Ali even followed her in his vehicle, although he denied this due to insurance issues.
His Defense in Court
In court, Ali maintained that he didn’t think he did anything wrong. He even apologized in one of his Instagram messages, but when questioned about the apology, he revealed that it was ChatGPT that suggested he do so. His defense? He only messaged her three times and saw no harm in asking her out for coffee. Yet, Caitlin testified that she felt “scared” during these encounters, and Ali was eventually found guilty of stalking.
What Happens Next?
Ali’s sentencing has been deferred pending further background checks. He will face final sentencing next month, as Sheriff Anthony Deutsch awaits reports.
The Broader Impact
This incident raises concerns about the misuse of AI and how it can be twisted to justify harmful behaviors. While ChatGPT is an incredible tool for productivity and creativity, it is essential to remember that it is not a guide for human relationships or decisions. As this case demonstrates, tools like ChatGPT should be used ethically and responsibly.
